To address these problems, an international research team working for the European Project SUCCIPACK is producing packaging made from PBS (polybutylene succinate), which is based on vegetable biomass. This is especially derived from discarded parts of beetroot, wheat and corn, so as not to interfere with the agricultural production. Eleven European companies and seven research centers are taking part in the project.

The goal of the project is to significantly increase the production of organic based and biodegradable packaging. This creates a continuous process whereby the packaging is completely recyclable or degradable, for example by becoming compost, for soil fertilization. Besides the researchers want to reduce the size of the packaging, to make it less cumbersome.
